Passwordstate 5.0 Update – Build 5006

Hello everyone,

We have a few updates for Passwordstate, with the following changes:

  • Fix – The Image dropdown list was cutoff at the bottom of the browser when adding or editing Password Lists. Only effected small screen resolutions
  • Fix – When an unregistered users browses to the Passwordstate web site they receive the error – ‘Incorrect syntax near…. DEFAULT’
  • Fix – When exporting data to csv, some non-english character sets where not being translated correctly
  • Fix – Improved memory consumption for w3wp.exe process (IIS Worker Process)
  • Updated – Updated to the latest version of ASP.NET Ajax controls
  • Updated – Updated logout screen to provide the option to log back in

If you are experiencing these bugs and wish to upgrade, please follow these instructions:

  • Download the latest copy of Passwordstate from here – http://www.clickstudios.com.au/downloads/passwordstate.zip
  • Backup your passwordstate5 database
  • Take a copy of the web.config file in the root of the Passwordstate folder
  • Take a copy of the files in /images/lookupimages and /App_Data/RadSpell (only required if you’ve added new Account Type Images or added custom words to the Editor’s dictionary)
  • Uninstall Passwordstate from Control Panel (please note your database will not be touched during the uninstall)
  • Once uninstalled, reinstall Passwordstate
  • Replace the web.config and other files file from steps 3 & 4
  • Restart the Windows Service ‘Passwordstate Service’
  • If you have modified the standard ‘passwordstate’ cname DNS entry for the web site, or configured the web site to use a SSL certificate, you will need to redo these steps

Passwordstate 5.0 Available

Hello All,

Click Studios are pleased to annouce the immediate availability of version 5.0 of Passwordstate, which can be downloaded from http://www.clickstudios.com.au/downloads/passwordstate.zip.

As version 5.0 requires a new registration key, all existing customers will be emailed shortly with their new key.

Upgrading Passwordstate from 4.x to 4.5

In order to upgrade to version 5.0 of Passwordstate, you must first be using version 4.5.

To upgrade Passwordstate from version 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 or 4.4 to 4.5, please following these instructions:

  • Backup your Passwordstate4 database
  • Take a copy of the web.config file
  • Uninstall Passwordstate from Control Panel (please note your database will not be touched during the uninstall)
  • Once uninstalled, reinstall version 4.5 of Passwordstate – http://www.clickstudios.com.au/downloads/passwordstate4.zip
  • Replace the web.config file from step 2
  • Restart the Windows Service ‘Passwordstate Service’
  • If you have modified the standard ‘passwordstate4’ cname DNS entry for the web site, or configured the web site to use a SSL certificate, you will need to redo these steps
  • Browse to the Passwordstate web site, and it should take you to a page asking you to upgrade to version 4.5. You will need to specify an SQL account with sufficient privileges to alter table structures i.e the sa account, or an account with the ‘dbcreator’ role.

Passwordstate 5 Beta Available

PS5 Update – Forms Based Authentication

Hi Everyone,

We’ve now finished coding forms based authentication for Passwordstate, for customers who do not wish to rely on Active Directory for authentication. Essentially each user will need to specify a username and password to authenticate for Passwordstate.

With forms based authentication, Passwordstate is still fully functional except for the following features:

  • Only local security groups can be used to logically organize user accounts – no synchronization with Active Directory security groups is possible
  • ScramblePad Authentication is not available – not really needed as the user has to manually authenticate anyway
  • Adding Active Directory user accounts – obviously :)

PS5 Update – ScramblePad Authentication

Hi All,

In version 5 of Passwordstate, we will be introducing a  second-level authentication called ScramblePad Authentication (see screenshot). Some of the features relating to the ScramblePad Authentication are:ScramblePad Password Authentication

  • It can be enabled by Security Administrators for all users, or individual users can choose to use it for their own account – it’s an optional feature
  • A ScramblePad pin number will be assigned to your account, and you must type in the corresponding letters when you log in
  • The letters displayed are randomly generated every time, which is particularly good to mitigate against key loggers – as what you type in for your pin number will be unique every time

We also intend to introduce an option for forms based authentication in the next release. With forms based authentication there will be no reliance on Active Directory, and users will need to type in their username and password to authenticate.

We hope you like the new feature when its released, and we’d love to hear your feedback regarding it.

PS5 Update – High Availability Option

Hi Everyone,

Another feature we will be adding to Passwordstate 5 is an option for a High Availability, which provides a read-only copy of Passwordstate in case the main install is unavailable for whatever reason. Some details are:

  • It will rely on SQL Server’s native data replication for keeping the data in sync
  • The read only passive node will disable all relevant controls to prevent new data being written – see screenshot
  • An option will also be provided which checks the active node is unavailable prior to making the passive node available to users

PS5 Update – Improved Role Based Access and Permissions

Hi All,

We’ve been busy during the holiday period making improvements to Role Based Access and Permissions (small screenshot below). Here are a few things you can expect to see in the next release:

•    3 levels of assigning access – View, Modify & Admin
•    These 3 levels can be assigned to an entire Password List, or just specific passwords within a Password List
•    Time-based Access – access to passwords or Password Lists can automatically be removed after a set period of time, or the next time when a password is changed
•    Security Groups – Access to Passwordstate, Password Lists and individual passwords can now be achieved through security groups. These can be either local security groups created within Passwordstate, or synchronized with Active Directory security groups
•    We’ve also added another method by which access is approved, but we’re not revealing that one yet – it’s kind of cool ?

Passwordstate 4.5 Released with Password Generator

Hi Everyone,

Passwordstate 4.5 is now available with the following changes:

  • New – Added Random Password Generator allowing bulk creation of passwords (Ref 45.01)
  • New – Added optional feature for automatically generating a random password when creating a new password record (Ref 45.02)
  • Fix- Fixed a bug where IPv6 IP Addresses could not be added to the Audit table (Ref 45.03)

Passwordstate 4.4 Released

Hi Everyone,

Available immediately is version 4.4 of Passwordstate, which includes the following changes:

  • New – Added feature whereby you can quickly filter the grid columns by pressing the Enter key – as opposed to selecting one of the filter types from the dropdown list (Ref 44.01)
  • New – Added feature whereby the filtered state of grids is maintained across multiple pages (Ref 44.02)
  • New – Added improved notification for saving grid layouts, and when passwords are copied to the clipboard (Ref 44.03)
  • New – Added feature where you can bulk update passwords in a Shared Password List (Ref 44.04)
  • New – Added two additional reports (formatting improvements) (Ref 44.05)
  • Fix -  Fixed issue where proxy servers were caching some page content (Ref 44.06)
  • Fix -  Fixed bug in ‘User Access to Passwords’ report whereby a user’s firstname or surname may not have been displayed if the previous user’s firstname or surname was the same (Ref 44.07)
  • Fix -  Fix bug introduced in 4.3 where the characters < > & weren’t displayed correctly when viewing passwords in the grid view (Ref 44.08)
